Charger update: UAH (10-18-2 overall, 9-13-2 WCHA) moved back into sixth place in the WCHA standings after a series split with No. 19 Northern Michigan at the VBC last weekend.

The Chargers lost the opener 4-3 on a late goal but rebounded to win the second game 4-2.

Josh Kestner scored three goals against NMU, two in Sunday’s win, to reach 20 for the season, becoming the first Charger in 13 years to do so. He leads the WCHA in goals scored.

Tyler Poulsen also had three goals against the Wildcats, along with an assist. Poulsen has a five-game point-scoring streak, totaling seven points in this stretch.

Jordan Uhelski made 31 saves on Saturday and 34 on Sunday. He has made 30-plus saves in four straight games. His .918 save percentage in conference play is second in the WCHA, and his .913 save percentage overall is first.

UAH can clinch a WCHA playoff spot with four points or if Lake Superior gives four points in the last four games.

About the Mavericks: Minnesota State (21-7-0 overall, 17-5-0 WCHA) swept Alaska Anchorage at home last week to reach the 20-win plateau for the sixth straight season. MSU moved up to fifth in both the USCHO and USA Today polls.

The Mavericks, with home ice in the first round already locked down, sit in second place in the WCHA standings, one point behind Northern Michigan. MSU has two games in hand, however.

MSU hosted UAH back on Dec. 15-16, with the Mavericks handily dispatching the Chargers 5-1 and 3-0. C.J. Seuss scored four goals as the Mavericks outshot UAH 73-31 in the series.

The Mavericks sport five of the WCHA’s top eight scorers in conference play. Seuss leads the club in goals, Zeb Knutson leads in assists, and Jake Jaremko is likely running away with this season’s WCHA Rookie of the Year award. They lead an offense that is tops in the league by over a goal per game ahead of second-place Bowling Green and Northern Michigan.

Connor LaCouvee leads the league in overall goals against average and is just behind Uhelski in save percentage. Junior Jason Pawloski has made 11 starts between the pipes with a 2.56 goals against and two shutouts.

Defenseman Daniel Brickley is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. He was hurt last Saturday against Alaska Anchorage.

Charger update: UAH (9-17-2 overall, 8-12-2 WCHA) split its series with Bemidji State in the first home games in two months. The Chargers won 5-1 on Friday and lost 5-1 on Saturday.

UAH currently sits in seventh place in the WCHA standings with six games to go. The top eight go to the WCHA playoffs.

Josh Kestner opened Friday’s victory with his 17th goal of the season, which ties him with Northern Michigan’s Robbie Payne for most in the WCHA. In league play overall, Kestner is on top alone with 15 goals.

Senior captain Max McHugh made a solid return to the lineup, making his season debut Friday with an assist. He scored his first goal of the season for the lone UAH tally on Saturday.

Tyler Poulsen and a goal on Friday and an assist on Saturday, giving him 19 points on the season. He leads the Chargers with 13 assists.

Senior Brennan Saulnier, who is tied for second on the team in goals and tied for third in points, will miss this series and the next as he is suspended for his actions on Saturday.

About the Wildcats: Northern Michigan (17-10-3 overall, 15-5-2 WCHA) is hands down the surprise team in the WCHA under first-year head coach Greg Potulny. The Wildcats have won six straight games, all in conference, to move to the top of the WCHA standings and enter the USCHO poll at No. 19.

NMU has a number of offensive weapons. Troy Loggins and Adam Rockwood lead the WCHA in overall points with 32, and Darien Craighead and Philip Beaulieu are tied for seventh with 25.

Craighead and Loggins are second in the league in overall goals with 15, and Robbie Payne is tied with Kestner at the top with 17. Loggins scored two goals in the series against UAH in Marquette in December.

Rockwood, who has a seven-game scoring streak, leads the country in assists with 25.

Goaltender Atte Tolvanen is fourth in the league in overall goals against average at 2.52.

Charger update: UAH (8-16-2 overall, 7-11-2 WCHA) spent last week off after finishing off a long road trip. The last stop was two weeks ago at Alaska Anchorage, where the Chargers won 4-2 and lost 2-1.

The Chargers sit in sixth place in the WCHA standings, 10 points behind fifth-place Michigan Tech. UAH looks to secure a WCHA playoff spot during this home stand, which has four series in the final five weeks of the regular season.

Josh Kestner had three points in the 4-2 win at Anchorage, and has four goals in the last six games. His 36 career goals have moved him into a tie for seventh in UAH’s modern Division I era.

UAH should have senior captain Max McHugh back in the lineup. McHugh, who is still UAH’s active leader with 64 career points, has missed the entire season so far after in injury in the preseason.

About the Beavers: Bemidji State (13-7-6 overall, 10-4-4 WCHA) is on a tear, winning its last eight conference games and getting points in its last 11 against WCHA opponents to move into fourth place. Last week, the Beavers swept Ferris State on the road by scores of 2-0 and 4-1.

BSU is led by their senior goaltender, Michael Bitzer, who posted his fifth shutout of the season against FSU on Saturday. It was his 21st career shutout, moving him into second place on the NCAA’s all-time list. Bitzer earned his fourth WCHA goaltender of the week award of the season.

The Beavers are stalwarts on defense, ranked 10th in the country in goals allowed per game overall (2.35). If you get a power play opportunity (BSU is committing only 8.5 penalty minutes per game), it likely won’t amount to much: The Beavers are second in the nation in penalty kill at 89.5 percent. Add in their 8th-ranked power play and BSU has been a special teams force.

Three weeks ago in Bemidji, Adam Brady scored three goals against the Chargers in BSU’s sweep.

Charger update: UAH (7-15-2 overall, 6-10-2 WCHA) split the series at Alaska Fairbanks last week, losing 3-2 and winning 3-1. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak.

In the first game, Kurt Gosselin scored his fourth goal of the season and Austin Beaulieu tallied his first, but the Nanooks broke a 2-2 tie with a goal with 55 seconds remaining to prevent Mark Sinclair (21 saves) from getting his first win in his fifth start.

In the finale, Josh Kestner notched his team-leading 15th goal (2nd in the WCHA) and Beaulieu scored again to give UAH a 2-0 lead. Christian Rajic’s empty-net goal with 43 seconds to go sealed the win.

Jordan Uhelski made 35 saves on Saturday, raising his overall save percentage to .911, the second-best in the WCHA this season.

Charger update: UAH (6-14-2 overall, 5-9-2 WCHA) saw its losing streak extended to five games at Bemidji State last week, losing 3-1 and 4-1.

The Chargers have struggled to score during the skid with only four goals in the last five games. UAH is now in seventh place in the WCHA standings, one point ahead of this week’s opponent, Alaska.

Josh Kestner was UAH’s only goal scorer at Bemidji, getting the lone tally in both games. That boosted his season total to 14, the most in a season by any Charger since Grant Selinger scored 17 in the 2006-07 season. Kestner is second in the WCHA in overall goals, and his 12 goals in WCHA play tops the league.

With 35 career goals, Kestner is tied for ninth in UAH’s modern Division I era. It’s been 11 years since anyone has entered the top 10.

UAH will have Brennan Saulnier, who is tied for second on the team in goals with seven, back in the lineup after his two-game suspension.

Jordan Uhelski was very busy between the pipes, stopping 67 of 73 BSU shots on goal.

UAH goes to Fairbanks directly from Bemidji, and will head directly to Anchorage for next week’s series against the Seawolves. This is the fifth of sixth straight series on the road.

About the Nanooks: Alaska (7-11-2 overall, 5-8-1 WCHA) has had the last three weeks off for the holidays. The Nanooks’ last action was Dec. 8-9, sweeping their arch-rival Alaska Anchorage. They have won three of their last four, all on the road.

This weekend will be the first time UAH will face a Division I opponent whose head coach is a Charger alum. Lance West, who was promoted to head coach at Alaska over the summer, played for UAH from 1991-95. West was an assistant at UAF for nine seasons under departing coach Dallas Ferguson.

Justin Woods is tied for fourth among WCHA defensemen in points with 15.

Charger update: UAH (6-12-2 overall, 5-7-2 WCHA) was swept at seventh-ranked Minnesota State two weeks ago, falling 5-1 and 3-0. Tyler Poulsen had the lone goal for the series, his fifth of the season.

The Chargers are tied with this week’s opponent, Bemidji State, for sixth in the WCHA standings, with 18 points.

This is the fourth series of six straight on the road. The Chargers will be on the road continuously for the next three weeks, going from Bemidji to Fairbanks to Anchorage.

UAH will be without Brennan Saulnier for this series at Bemidji. Saulnier, who has seven goals this season, was suspended by the WCHA for two games for a contact to the head penalty in the final minute of the second game at Minnesota State.

About the Beavers: Bemidji State (7-6-5 overall, 4-4-4 WCHA) is undefeated in its last five games. The Beavers swept Alaska Anchorage at home two weeks ago by scores for 5-1 and 4-0.

It’s been a tougher start than expected for the defending MacNaughton Cup champions. The Beavers, picked to finish second in the media and coaches preseason polls, is tied with UAH for sixth in the WCHA standings.

BSU is led by their senior goaltender, Michael Bitzer. While not posting the All-American numbers from last year, Bitzer still has three shutouts, including his 19th career blank slate against UAA. He was the latest WCHA goaltender of the week.

Senior forward Kyle Bauman leads the Beavers with 19 points, tied for sixth in the WCHA. Junior forward Jay Dickman is tied for fourth in the league with 10 goals after getting his second hat trick of the season against Anchorage.

Charger update: UAH (6-9-1 overall, 5-4-1 WCHA) earned its third straight series split last week at Northern Michigan. The Chargers are tied for fifth place in the WCHA with 16 points.

On Friday, Christian Rajic scored the game’s first goal, the seventh of the season for the freshman, but NMU scored two straight shorthanded goals and held off the Chargers, 3-1. Tyler Poulsen had his team-leading 10th assist.

On Saturday, Josh Kestner scored the game-tying goal late in the second period and the game-winner early in the third as UAH won 3-2. The senior Huntsville native now has 10 goals to lead the team. John Teets scored his third goal of the season, and Madison Dunn pitched in two assists.

Jordan Uhelski started both games in net, making 51 saves on 56 shots.

This is the second of six straight road series for the Chargers.

About the Falcons: Bowling Green (7-5-5 overall, 6-2-4 WCHA) earned four points at home against Bemidji State last week, winning 3-1 and tying 3-3 (losing the point after in a shootout). The Falcons moved ahead of idle Minnesota State atop the WCHA standings with 24 points.

Mitch McLain, a first-team all-WCHA forward last season, leads the Falcons with six goals. He got the empty-netter to cinch BGSU’s win over Bemidji State last Friday.

Sophomore goaltender Ryan Bedard, a Florida Panthers prospect, leads the WCHA and is ranked ninth in Division I in both save percentage (.927) and goals against average (2.02). The Falcons also have freshman Eric Dop, who earned WCHA Rookie of the Week honors for last week’s 24-save, one-goal-allowed performance in the win over Bemidji State.

Charger update: UAH (5-8-1 overall, 4-3-1 WCHA) gutted out a split against Ferris State last week to finish its six-game homestand. After allowing six unanswered goals in a 6-2 loss on Friday, the Chargers overcame bumps, bruises, and two deficits to win 5-3 on Saturday. UAH finished the homestand 3-2-1, and is 4-2-1 in its last seven games overall.

Northern Michigan is the first of six road series in seven weeks. The Chargers won’t play at home until Jan. 26.

Brandon Salerno scored twice in Saturday’s victory, including the game-winning goal with 7:06 remaining in regulation.

Josh Kestner got a goal in each game to raise his season total to eight to lead all the team. Kestner is third in the WCHA in overall goals. He has 12 points on the season, tied with Tyler Poulsen.

Poulsen had two assists on Saturday, give him a team-leading nine (tied for seventh in the WCHA).

Freshman goaltender Mark Sinclair made his third start of the season on Friday, making 29 saves. Senior goalie Jordan Uhelski was back between the pipes Saturday, stopping 32 of 35 FSU shots in the win.

About the Wildcats: Northern Michigan (7-7-0 overall, 5-3-0 WCHA) has lost three in a row after being swept in a non-conference series at Omaha. It was NMU’s first time being swept this season, following a strong start that included splits with then-No. 6 Wisconsin and then-No. 9 Minnesota State.

Robbie Payne has been the main offensive force for the Wildcats, with 12 goals in 14 games this season. The senior captain is tied for the WCHA lead in overall goals and tied for second in overall points (16). NMU is 6-1-0 when Payne has scored a goal this season.

Phillip Beaulieu (no relation to UAH’s Austin Beaulieu) is tied for fifth in the league in defenseman scoring with 10 points.

Junior Atte Tolvanen is their top netminder, whose 2.43 goals against average is third in the WCHA and .916 save percentage is second. He posted a 35-save shutout at Ferris State on Oct. 14 and a 19-save shutout against Michigan Tech on Nov. 11.

Charger update: UAH (4-7-1 overall, 3-2-1 WCHA) had a split at home against Lake Superior State last week, with the Chargers losing 3-1 on Friday and winning 5-3 on Saturday.

This series against Ferris State will finish UAH’s six-game home stand before playing the next 12 on the road. The Chargers won’t play at the Von Braun Center again for two months.

Christian Rajic scored UAH’s first freshman hat trick in 15 years in Saturday’s win, giving him six goals on the season. He and senior Josh Kestner are tied for second on the team in goals.

Brennan Saulnier scored his team-leading seventh goal on Saturday, already besting his high mark for a season. His 10 points are tied with Tyler Poulsen, who has five assists in the last three games.

Jordan Uhelski has started the last five games for the Chargers in net. He matched a season high against LSSU on Saturday with 41 saves.

Charger update: UAH (3-6-1 overall, 2-1-1 WCHA) took four of six points against Alaska Anchorage in its first home series of the season last week.

The Chargers dominated the first game 5-1, with Brennan Saulnier scoring two goals. They rallied from two goals down in the third period to tie the second game 3-3, with Connor Merkley getting the equalizer with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation. UAA won the extra point in the WCHA standings in a shootout.

Josh Kestner scored twice in the second game. He and Saulnier have six goals, tied for the team lead and fourth in the WCHA overall leaders.

Cam Knight had three assists in the series, giving him a team-leading six for the year. Kurt Gosselin had a helper to give him seven points, tying him for fifth in the WCHA in defenseman scoring.

In goal, Jordan Uhelski made 16 saves on Friday and 31 on Saturday, raising his save percentage to .901.

UAH went 4-for-10 on the power play for the series.

About the Lakers: Lake Superior State (2-7-3 overall, 1-3-2 WCHA) comes to Huntsville after a tie (with shootout loss) and a loss at Bowling Green last weekend.

The Lakers have already played in four overtime games this season, going 1-0-3. One of those ties was at then-No. 1 Denver, with goaltender Nick Kossoff needing to make 63 saves.

Kossoff, a junior, and freshman Mareks Mitens have split the goaltending duties with six starts apiece.

Senior forward J.T. Henke is tied with Minnesota State’s C.J. Seuss for the WCHA’s overall scoring lead with 15 points. He leads the league in assists with 12.
