Chargers to finish first half at Ferris State

The Chargers will finish the first half of the 2019-20 season on the road against Ferris State in a WCHA series.

UAH (1-13-2 overall, 1-9-2 WCHA) is coming off a tough series at Bowling Green last week. In game one, the Chargers lead 3-0 at the halfway point but allowed nine unanswered goals. UAH battled back to a 2-2 tie in the second game, while BGSU took the extra WCHA point in the 3-on-3 second overtime.

Christian Rajic, Jack Jeffers, and Tyr Thompson each lead the Chargers with four goals on the season. Josh Latta tops UAH with seven assists. Latta and Rajic each have nine points.

Goaltender Mark Sinclair (4.27 goals against average, .883 save percentage) had a mixed weekend at Bowling Green. After a strong start in game one, he then allowed all nine goals. He came back to stop 38 of 40 shots in the tie in game two.

Ferris State (5-9-1 overall, 3-6-1 WCHA), which was idle last week, sits in eighth place in the WCHA standings. The Bulldogs are 3-2-1 in their last six games, including a win and a tie at Alaska Anchorage two weeks ago. FSU went 2-1-1 in a two-week Alaska trip visiting both Fairbanks and Anchorage.

FSU’s top three scorers are all defensemen. Freshman Jake Willets leads the team with 14 points, 13 of which are assists. Seniors Nate Kallen and Joe Rutkowski each have 10 points. Kallen and junior forward Coale Norris each have five goals.

Goaltending has been split almost evenly between three players: senior Austin Shaw, sophomore Roni Salmenkangas, and freshman Carter McPhail. McPhail (3.00 GAA, .904 SV%) has started in three of the Bulldogs’ last four games.

Las season, the Chargers and Bulldogs split the season series 2-2, each winning and losing a game in Huntsville and Big Rapids. FSU leads the all-time series 17-9-2, but the teams are 5-5 in the last 10 meetings.

After this weekend at Ferris State, UAH will be off until January 3-4 when the Chargers go to North Dakota. The Chargers return home on January 9-10 against Bemidji State.

Chargers head to BG to face soaring Falcons

The Chargers finally have a win under their belt, and they look to take a little confidence up to Ohio where they will face 13th-ranked Bowling Green this weekend.

UAH (1-12-1 overall, 1-8-1 WCHA) used a three-goal burst in the first period on the way to a 4-2 win over Northern Michigan last Friday. Connor Wood (goal and assist) and Connor Merkley (two assists) had multi-point games.

The Chargers didn’t put forth the same complete game on Saturday, as NMU took the second game, 3-1. Brandon Salerno had the lone goal.

Christian Rajic (three goals, five assists) and Josh Latta (two goals, six assists) lead the Chargers with eight points.

Goaltender Mark Sinclair put together back-to-back outings, stopping 59 of 63 shots for a .937 weekend save percentage. UAH needed that after going into the series with a .859 team save percentage.

UAH is going to need more of that effort against Bowling Green (10-5-0 overall, 5-3-0 WCHA), which has won nine of 12.

Last week, the Falcons swept a big non-conference series, beating then-No. 5 Notre Dame by 5-2 scores in a home-and-home.

The Falcons are lead offensively by a pair of juniors, each with 14 points this season. Cameron Wright has 10 goals while Connor Ford has seven.

Alec Rauhauser, who was the WCHA Defenseman of the Month for October and November, joins Wright and Ford with 14 points. The senior captain had a goal against Notre Dame to reach 100 points for his career at BG.

Eric Dop has a 2.00 goals against average and .920 save percentage in 14 starts this season for the Falcons.

Next week, the Chargers finish action for 2019 at Ferris State.

Preview: NMU visits for rematch at VBC

Still looking for answers, the Chargers host Northern Michigan this weekend at Propst Arena.

The teams met in Marquette four weeks ago, with the Wildcats taking both games by scores of 5-3 and 4-2. NMU needed an empty-net goal in each game to clinch victory.

The Chargers remain winless after 12 games, and most recently had their biggest setback on Saturday when they fell 7-0 at Bemidji State.

Christian Rajic had an assist in Friday’s 5-3 loss at Bemidji to tie the team lead in points with seven. Rajic had a goal and an assist against NMU in earlier this month.

Northern Michigan (7-5-2 overall, 5-3-0 WCHA) is coming off being swept in a home-and-home against its arch-rival, Michigan Tech. The two losses pushed NMU out of this week’s USCHO.com Top 20.

Griffin Loughran, who had a goal in each game against the Chargers, did the same against Tech to lead NMU with 11 goals in 14 games. He has 19 points total to lead the WCHA in both categories.

After this weekend with NMU, the Chargers head back on the road with series at Bowling Green and Ferris State before the holiday break. UAH’s next home series is January 9-10 against Bemidji State.

Preview: Chargers head to Bemidji following bye week

After an off week, the Chargers head to old rival Bemidji State this weekend again looking for victory.

UAH (0-9-1 overall, 0-5-1 WCHA) last played on Nov. 5-6, rallying from two goals down to tie Alaska Anchorage 4-4 but then losing 3-1. The Chargers only got one league point after not winning the shootout after the tie.

Freshman Josh Latta is pacing the Chargers with seven points and six assists. Christian Rajic and Jack Jeffers each have six points on three goals and three assists. Rajic has five points in the last three games.

Goaltenders Mark Sinclair and David Fessenden split time against Alaska Anchorage. For the season, Sinclair has a 4.29 goals against average and .876 save percentage in seven starts, while Fessenden posts 3.39 and .889 in three starts.

Last week, Bemidji State (4-4-2 overall, 4-2-0 WCHA) went to Ferris State and got a split. The Beavers, currently tied for fourth place in the WCHA standings, lost 2-1 on Friday and won 4-1 on Saturday.

The Beavers’ four wins have come in their last six games. They have scored 20 goals in those victories (and only two goals in the two losses).

Junior goaltender Zach Driscoll is second in the WCHA in both goals against average (1.61) and save percentage (.938). He has started eight of the Beavers’ 10 games.

Senior Adam Brady and junior Adam Miller each lead the Beavers with 10 points. Brady has six goals and Miller four.

These will be the 89th and 90th meetings between the Chargers and the Beavers. BSU holds a 51-32-5 in the overall series dating back to 1994.

Last season, UAH went up to Bemidji and split the lone series. The Chargers followed up a 4-0 loss with a 4-2 victory. The teams will play four times this season, with the series at the Von Braun Center coming on January 9-10.

Next week, the Chargers return home to play Northern Michigan. Puck drop on both Nov. 29 and 30 is 7 p.m.

Preview: Chargers can get over hump at home vs. UAA

The last two weeks, the Chargers have played better and better against two of the better teams in the WCHA. That first victory, however, has continued to elude them.

The Chargers (0-8-0 overall, 0-4-0 WCHA) feel they can finally end their losing streak this weekend when they return to Propst Arena to take on the Seawolves of Alaska Anchorage.

Last weekend, the Chargers lost 5-3 and 4-2 to Northern Michigan in Marquette, both being one-goal games until NMU scored an empty-net goal in the final minute.

It was the best offensive effort for UAH this season. The five goals matched their total from the first six games, and the Chargers outshot NMU 59-56 for the series.

“Our group has continued to get better,” UAH head coach Mike Corbett said told media on Tuesday. “Now we just have to learn how to win those games. We have to learn how to not make that big mistake at the crucial time.

“These kids can handle adversity. And they’re not listening to the outside noise. They’re seeing that they’re improving every day.

Freshman Josh Latta had an assist in each game, giving him five on the year. Still searching for his first goal, he currently leads UAH in scoring with those five points.

Jack Jeffers, Christian Rajic, and Tyr Thompson each scored their second goals of the season in the series.

Alaska Anchorage (1-4-1 overall, 1-1-0 WCHA) has had its own struggles in recent years. The Seawolves won only three games overall and two games in WCHA play last season.

So, this weekend is as good a chance as any for the Chargers to end their skid, especially at home.

“We have to try to do as much as we can against the bottom group teams,” Corbett said.

“It’s always good to be home. For us, to be able to get off the bus after a long trip and then skate and play at the VBC, it’s great.”

The Chargers want fans to come to Propst Arena after the big football game in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.

“Alabama plays (LSU) at 2, and we play at 7, so everybody’s got to come out for the 7:00 game,” Corbett said. “We’re hoping to be able to get a good crowd on Friday and a good crowd on Saturday to help our guys.”

Anchorage does have a win over their arch-rival Alaska. Last week, the Seawolves lost 4-3 and tied 3-3 with Omaha at home.

Freshman Nick Wicks has eight points on two goals and six assists in six games so far. Nine of Anchorage’s 13 goals this season have come from freshmen, including three from Alex Frye.

Preview: Chargers head to NMU for first WCHA road series

The Chargers head north this weekend in search of their first win of the season, taking on Northern Michigan in the first road WCHA series.

UAH has found some success against Northern Michigan in recent years. Last season, the Chargers took a 2-point tie at home. In 2017-18, UAH went 3-4 against the Wildcats. Two of those wins came in Marquette, including one victory in the WCHA quarterfinals.

UAH (0-6-0 overall, 0-2-0 WCHA) lost 5-1 and 4-1 to No. 2-ranked Minnesota State last weekend in the Chargers’ first series at home. The second game was tied 1-1 with 10 minutes to go, but the Mavericks scored two quick goals to pull away.

Despite being outshot 88-30 for the series, the Chargers got a strong effort from goaltender Mark Sinclair. The junior played both games and made 79 saves, including 45 in the first game, one short of his career high.

UAH continued to struggle offensively, now with only five goals on the season. Jack Jeffers and Sean Rappleyea had the tallies for the Chargers against Minnesota State. Jeffers and freshman Josh Latta lead UAH with three points.

Northern Michigan (4-1-1, 2-0-0) is off to a strong start, getting a sweep at Ferris State (4-3 and 6-4) last week to start WCHA play and enter the USCHO.com poll at No. 20. The Wildcats also posted a tie and win at Boston University to weeks ago.

Two sophomore forwards have been tearing it up for NMU. Vincent de May and Griffin Loughran each have six goals already. Loughran scored four goals, including a hat trick on Saturday, against Ferris State to earn WCHA forward of the week honors.

Northern Michigan has split time in net between sophomore Nolan Kent and freshman John Hawthorne. Hawthorne has put up the better numbers in his three starts, with a 2.27 goals against average and .921 save percentage.

Preview: UAH comes home to challenge against No. 2

The Chargers open the home schedule and WCHA action this weekend against a nemesis.

Minnesota State (3-0-1), No. 2 in the latest USCHO.com and USA Today polls, will be the highest-ranked Division I team to ever visit Huntsville.

The Mavericks, who are favored to take the WCHA title again this season, have been the hardest nuts to crack for the Chargers. UAH hasn’t beaten MSU in the six seasons since joining the WCHA. The Chargers’ last win in the series came in 2002.

“It’s going to be a huge challenge,” UAH head coach Mike Corbett said. “We played them in the playoffs at the end of last year, so we know exactly what we’re getting into with them. But it’s a good challenge, a challenge we have to embrace. I’m excited to see how we’re going to be up to that challenge.”

Meanwhile, UAH (0-4-0) has had a rough start out of the gate, scoring only three goals in four road games. Coach Mike Corbett says his young team is learning how tough Division I hockey can be.

“We are playing nine freshman on most nights,” Corbett said. “As I have told this group before, D-I hockey is a men’s league and our young guys now have a good understanding of what it takes to compete night in and night out at this level.

“We have improved every game even though the scores may not show it.  We need to fight out way to the net front to get second chance opportunities. Lots of shots missing the net and young mistakes have hurt us, especially at the end of shifts.”

“I like this team a lot. There will be a learning curve but our young guys are all players that will help us continue to win games. We have to stay on them and keep pushing for improvement and good habits within their game.”

Jack Jeffers and Josh Latta each have two assists in the early going. In goal, time has been split between junior Mark Sinclair and freshman David Fessenden, each with two starts.

For the Mavericks, freshman Lucas Snowden has already made a mark with seven points (two goals and five assists) in four games. Senior Marc Michaelis is continuing to be a force with four goals. Goaltender Dryden McKay has allowed only six goals in four games.

“They’re an older, senior-laden group and have a very good offense,” Corbett said. “We have to match their intensity right off the bat.”

The Chargers struggled to only two goals in their season-opening series at UMass Lowell. UAH lost 5-1 on Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday while being outshot 74-32 over the two games.

UAH, working on being more aggressive on offense, will take some lessons learned to Omaha this weekend against the NCHC’s Mavericks.

Christian Rajic and Tyr Thompson scored the two goals for UAH. Jack Jeffers had assists on both of them. Josh Latta also helped on Thompson’s goal on Sunday for his first college point.

Freshman goaltender David Fessenden had a good collegiate debut in Sunday’s game, making 37 saves. Mark Sinclair started Saturday’s opener.

About the Mavericks: Omaha won only five games in the powerful NCHC last season, finishing last. The Mavericks were 9-24-3 overall.

UNO will be starting its regular season against the Chargers this weekend after a 3-3 tie against Manitoba in exhibition play on Monday.

Like the Chargers (and UMass Lowell last week), the Mavericks have a ton of freshmen on the roster — 12 to be exact, including all three goaltenders. UNO is picked to finish seventh in the NCHC this season.

Top returning players include sophomore Taylor Ward, last season’s NCHC rookie of the year, and senior Zach Jordan. Both scored nine goals in 2018-19.

Head to head: UAH and Nebraska Omaha have met 16 times since 1997, with the Mavericks leading the series 11-2-3. The last meeting happened in Omaha in the 2014-15 season, with the Mavericks winning 2-1 and before the teams tied 3-3.

UAH starts its 35th varsity season of hockey and 41st season overall visiting UMass Lowell of Hockey East in a non-conference series.

The Chargers plan to be better prepared to start the season after last year’s 0-10 start. They have a lot of freshmen, but have added speed and size in hopes of being more aggressive and score more goals.

About the River Hawks: Last season, UMass Lowell finished 19-13-5 overall and 12-7-5 in Hockey East, placing fourth. UML lost in three games to Boston University in the Hockey East quarterfinals.

UML, picked to finish sixth in its league, also has a lot of youth on their squad, with 12 freshmen and nine sophomores on the roster.

The River Hawks top returning scorer is senior Kenny Hausinger, who scored 13 goals last season.

Senior goaltender and New York Rangers prospect Tyler Wall posted a 2.09 goals against average and .921 save percentage with four shutouts.

Preview: UAH at Minnesota State, WCHA quarterfinals

It’s the 2019 WCHA playoffs, and the eighth-seed Chargers head to Mankato this weekend to face top-seed and No. 4-ranked Minnesota State.

The Mavericks (27-7-2) won the MacNaughton Cup as WCHA regular-season champions for the second straight season and fourth time in five years.

Needless to say, UAH (8-26-2) is the clear underdog. The Chargers will need the usual great goaltending, timely goals, and minimal mistakes to pull off an upset win, and they’ll have to do it twice within three days.

Most likely candidates to help UAH pull the upset: Goaltender Mark Sinclair has posted big games this season in the WCHA, earning two shutouts. Hans Gorowsky has been hot as of late, scoring goals in four in his last five games.

The defensive corps has been stalwarts blocking shots, with Cam Knight leading the way with 75 blocks.
